The Alliance Theatre Presents Beloved Children’s Musical Comedy HONK!

2000 Olivier Award for Best Musical Plays The Alliance Stage March 5 - 20 2/24/11 The Alliance Theatre announces the beloved musical HONK! will begin performances on Saturday, March 5. Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved children’s fable The Ugly Duckling, HONK! Is the story of an odd looking baby duck, Ugly, and his quest to find his mother. With an original book and lyrics by Anthony Drewe and music by George Stiles, the production is directed by Sally G. Tomlinson Artistic Director of Theatre for Youth Rosemary Newcott. “For more than 150 years, this classic tale has taught children to embrace their inner beauty and not to judge others by their appearance,” said Newcott. “HONK! brings the story to life in the form of a musical which has been embraced by audiences all over the world. We’re thrilled to bring its magic to the children of Atlanta.” HONK! will be performed on the Alliance Stage on weekends beginning Saturday, March 5, 2011 with a matinee at 2:30 p.m. and the opening night performance at 7:00 p.m. Performances continue through Sunday, March 20 with weekend matinees scheduled for Saturday, March 12 and Sundays, March 13 and 20 at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. The second matinee on Saturday, March 19 will be performed at 4:00 p.m. Tickets start at $20 and are available at the Woodruff Arts Center Box Office by calling 404.733.5000 or online at alliancetheatre.org. Tony Award®-nominated run while Sister Act: the Musical will
arrive on Broadway this season after its run on London’s
West End. The Alliance also originated the national tours of
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Bring in da
Noise, Bring in da Funk. The Alliance enjoys a national reputation for finding
and developing Atlanta artists for the national stage,
including New York Times bestseller Pearl Cleage whose The
Nacirema Society Requests the Honor of Your Presence at a
Celebration of Their First One Hundred Years received its
world premiere in the fall of 2010 at the Alliance. Further
evidence of the Alliance’s commitment to new work is its
nationally recognized National Graduate Playwriting
Competition, a cutting-edge program introducing student
playwrights to professional networks across the country
while producing the world premiere of the winning student’s
work here at the Alliance. Work by past Competition winners
has gone on to be produced by theatres in New York, Chicago,
